The Ham Group of Companies is a privately owned, Ugandan multinational conglomerate that has grown to become one of the largest and most diversified business entities in East Africa. Founded by visionary entrepreneur Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, the group has expanded its footprint across multiple sectors, employing more than 7,000 people and establishing itself as a key player in the region’s industrial, real estate, and agribusiness landscapes. The conglomerate’s official headquarters, famously known as The White House, serves as the nerve center for its operations.

History and Growth of the Ham Group

The journey of the Ham Group began in 2005 when Dr. Kiggundu launched a small garment trading business in Uganda. Early exposure to business came from assisting his father, Hajji Segawa, in the family textile shop. Leveraging skills learned during school holidays and initial capital from his father, Hamis Kiggundu gradually grew his enterprise. His early ventures into real estate marked the start of a significant diversification strategy.

By 2009, Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd was established, focusing on constructing commercial properties. The company’s first flagship project, Ham Towers in Kampala, was completed in 2010 and became a landmark in Uganda’s commercial real estate sector. Following this, Ham Shopping Mall was completed within 18 months, providing a substantial boost to the group’s rental income and enabling the securing of additional financing for further expansion.

The company’s growth strategy evolved over the years, and by 2021, the Ham Group had diversified into large-scale industrialization, particularly in agro-processing. A notable milestone was the launch of the US$156 million Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Plant (IAIP) at Akright City. This project was designed to add value to Uganda’s agricultural products, positioning the group as a key contributor to national agro-industrial development.
