Co-op Pricing Glitch on Deliveroo App Lets Shoppers Get Free Pasta Sauce and Coffee
London, May 2, 2025 — A technical glitch on Thursday night allowed Deliveroo users to purchase Co-op groceries at drastically reduced prices, with some items—including Costa ground coffee and Loyd Grossman pasta sauce—showing up as completely free.
The pricing error, which affected several everyday products, led to dozens of delighted customers stocking up on goods for next to nothing. One shopper from Lancashire told the BBC he received over £80 worth of groceries for just £3.29, including delivery.
“I couldn’t believe it, but I placed the order and it arrived,” he said, adding that most of the food would be donated to his local food bank.
Retailer Blames ‘Clerical Error’
A Co-op spokesperson confirmed that a “clerical error” had caused some prices on its Deliveroo storefront to be mislisted for several hours.
“This issue was quickly resolved. We apologise for any inconvenience,” the spokesperson said.
Deliveroo has not commented on the incident.
Shoppers Flood Social Media With Bargain Hauls
Customers took to X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to share their heavily discounted hauls. Items like Fox’s cookies, Robinsons squash, and Airwick diffusers were among the most shared deals.
One user reported getting six bottles of squash for 15p each, while another shared images of multiple packs of washing tablets, ginger cakes, and soft drinks stacked on a sofa.
“I was just scrolling and saw someone say there was a glitch. I opened Deliveroo, and everything was £0 or pennies,” said Sally Marie from Greater Manchester. Her order, which included Diet Coke, biscuits, and pasta sauce, arrived in just 15 minutes.
What Are Your Rights in a Pricing Error?
According to Citizen’s Advice, consumers may be protected depending on a company’s terms and conditions. In many cases, once an online retailer accepts and dispatches the order, they are legally bound to honor the transaction.
In 2022, a similar pricing blunder saw EA’s FIFA 23 listed for just 4.80 rupees ($0.06) on India’s Epic Games Store. EA later confirmed it would honor all purchases made during the pricing error.
No Link to Recent Cyber Attack
The Co-op recently suffered a cyber attack, forcing parts of its IT systems offline. However, there is currently no evidence linking that breach to Thursday’s pricing glitch.
This unexpected shopping spree has raised questions about retailer response policies during tech mishaps—and brought smiles to budget-savvy shoppers who caught the rare deal in time.
