Two firefighters and a member of the public have tragically died following a large blaze at the Bicester Motion business park in Oxfordshire on Thursday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the former RAF hangar site at around 6:30 PM BST, where heavy smoke could be seen billowing across the town. Ten fire crews battled the flames, and as of Friday morning, four remained at the scene to monitor the situation, which is now under control.

The Oxfordshire County Council confirmed that two additional firefighters are hospitalized with serious injuries. One of the deceased firefighters was a London Fire Brigade sub officer who had been serving part-time in Oxfordshire.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we report the loss of two of our firefighters,” said Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall, adding that support was being provided to their families.

Outpouring of Tributes Across the UK

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the news as “devastating,” praising the bravery of firefighters and sending his condolences to the victims’ families.

“We hope those in hospital make a full and swift recovery,” Starmer added.

Labour MP Anneliese Dodds, speaking from the House of Commons, expressed deep sorrow and commended the firefighters for their courage. MP Calum Miller, representing Bicester and Woodstock, also extended sympathies and emphasized the emotional toll this would take on the fire service.

The National Fire Chiefs Council and Fire Brigades Union both issued statements of condolence, with union officials promising to investigate the circumstances of the incident and support affected families.

Community and Site Response

Bicester Motion, home to over 50 classic car restoration and aviation businesses, issued a heartfelt message:

“There are no words at times like this. We are grateful for the extraordinary bravery of the emergency teams and send love to the families of those we lost.”

Nearby St Laurence’s Church in Caversfield opened its doors for community prayer and reflection, offering support to those affected by the tragedy.

Oxford City Council lowered the city flag to half-mast in tribute, with Council Leader Susan Brown stating:

“We are reminded of the great risks our emergency services face every day. We owe them a deep debt of gratitude.”

Ongoing Investigation

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, and advice for local residents to stay indoors has been lifted. A full review is expected once recovery operations are complete.

Bicester Motion, located on the historic site of RAF Bicester, is a hub for motor enthusiasts and engineers. The site will remain closed over the weekend as authorities continue to coordinate with emergency services.
