Prince William Unveils Wildlife Documentary Honoring Global Rangers
Prince William has launched a new nature documentary series titled “Guardians”, inspired by Sir David Attenborough and aimed at raising awareness of the life-threatening challenges faced by rangers working to protect endangered wildlife.
Inspired by Attenborough’s Legacy
Speaking at a surprise appearance during a London screening of the series, the Prince of Wales praised Attenborough’s legacy and said his work inspired this new six-part production.
“Sir David showed us extraordinary parts of the world most of us may never see. I hope this series does the same,” Prince William said.
The prince, who shares a long-standing passion for conservation with Attenborough, also serves as the founder of the Earthshot Prize, a global initiative to address climate change and environmental damage.
Rangers on the Front Line
Guardians shines a spotlight on rangers around the world, many of whom risk their lives defending nature. According to the International Ranger Federation (IRF), over 1,400 rangers have died in the line of duty over the past decade, with 38 homicides recorded in just one year.
“This is now one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet,” William said. “Protecting the natural world shouldn’t come with this level of risk.”
A Personal Project
The prince personally led the project, attending the screening to underscore his commitment. A friend close to him said that William was deeply involved:
“He wanted the world to see the incredible, often overlooked, work rangers do.”
Each episode features an introduction by the prince and will explore ranger efforts in various regions battling poaching, civil unrest, and illegal wildlife trade.
Advocating for Support and Recognition
William also addressed the growing difficulty of recruiting new rangers, as many young people are discouraged by the dangers and lack of societal recognition.
“Why risk your life for a job few notice and that doesn’t pay enough?” he asked, before emphasizing that rangers also engage in community development, scientific research, and education.
In 2024, the prince launched a life insurance initiative for 10,000 rangers across Africa, further demonstrating his commitment to improving their conditions.
First Episode Now Streaming
The first episode of “Guardians” is now available via BBC Earth’s YouTube and social channels, with new episodes releasing every Friday. The series is co-produced by Zandland and supported by United for Wildlife, an initiative under The Royal Foundation.
Conclusion:
Prince William’s new series, Guardians, aims to not only spotlight global biodiversity challenges but also to elevate the bravery and value of the rangers who protect it. Through compelling storytelling and personal involvement, the prince hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation and urgent action for conservation efforts worldwide.
