Joe Bennett, the son of a British couple arrested in Iran, is calling on the UK government to act swiftly to bring his parents home, six months after they were charged with espionage during a round-the-world motorbike trip.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman, both 52 from East Sussex, were detained by Iranian authorities in January after crossing into the country on 31 December 2024. The couple, who were traveling from Spain to Australia, now face accusations of spying — a charge the family vehemently denies.
“They’re not criminals — they’re just Mum and Dad,” Joe said, his voice breaking with emotion. “They’re not spies. They’re not political. They’re just people who wanted to explore the world together.”
A Journey Cut Short in Ira
Joe last spoke with his parents on 3 January 2025, just before their arrest. Since then, contact has been minimal. One generic letter from Lindsay was shared with family and friends, and updates on their condition have come only via three embassy welfare checks, the last of which was in May.
“That’s tough,” Joe said. “Especially when you’re used to hearing someone’s voice every day.”
He described how his parents — a carpenter and a life coach — are trying to maintain their physical and mental health, even running figure-eights inside their cell to stay active.
Detention Amid Rising Tensions
The couple was reportedly transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran on 8 June, just 15 days before the prison was bombed during rising hostilities between Iran and Israel. This conflict also forced the UK to evacuate its embassy staff from Iran, leaving the couple with even less direct support.
Iranian authorities allege the couple entered the country “under the guise of tourists” and were under surveillance for gathering information in multiple regions. The Iranian judiciary claims their arrest was part of a “coordinated intelligence operation.”
However, the family insists the couple followed all legal protocols, including valid visas, licensed guides, and main-route hotel bookings.
‘Used as Leverage’
Human rights groups and UK officials have long accused Iran of detaining dual nationals to use as diplomatic leverage. At least 15 detainees with UK ties have faced similar charges in recent years.
Joe believes his parents are the latest pawns in this geopolitical strategy.
“They have UK passports and are being used as leverage by the Iranian regime,” he said.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has stated it continues to raise the case with Tehran and provide consular assistance to the family. However, Joe says the diplomatic approach has been too slow and unclear.
“We’re past words and comfort. Quiet diplomacy has gone on too long — what’s the actual plan to bring them home?”
UK Travel Warning
The FCDO currently advises against all travel to Iran, citing a “significant risk” of arbitrary detention for British and British-Iranian nationals.
According to UK government guidance:
“No face-to-face consular assistance will be possible in an emergency, and the UK will not be able to help you if you get into difficulty in Iran.”
