The families of those killed in the Isle of Wight helicopter crash have spoken of their devastation after three lives were lost in Monday morning’s tragedy near Shanklin.
Among the victims were Justyna Czoska and Wojtek Kowalkowski, a couple from Bloxham, Oxfordshire. In a tribute posted online, Ms Czoska’s daughter said she was “heartbroken” by the sudden loss of her mother, describing her as “the best mum you could ask for, loved by everyone.”
A fundraiser has been launched to help repatriate the couple’s remains to Poland, where they will be laid to rest. Organizer Jacob Butler said the tragedy had left their families “struggling to cope,” and appealed for support with funeral and travel costs.
The helicopter, a Robinson R44 II operated by Northumbria Helicopters, departed from Sandown Airport at around 09:00 before crashing at 09:20. Witnesses reported the aircraft spiralling before it came down in a field beside the A3020. Four people were on board. Three died, while a fourth passenger remains in hospital in serious condition.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed it has begun a detailed inquiry, which is expected to take up to 12 months. Investigators are currently recovering evidence from the site before transporting the wreckage to Farnborough for analysis.
Tributes have also been paid locally. Ms Czoska, who had worked as a riding instructor at Turpins Lodge Riding School in Oxfordshire, was remembered as cheerful, reliable, and deeply valued by both staff and students. The school said her death leaves “a huge hole to fill.”
As the investigation continues, the Isle of Wight helicopter crash has left families grieving, a community in shock, and renewed focus on aviation safety.
