Prince Harry seeks reconciliation with the royal family, but says King Charles won’t speak to him due to a long-standing dispute over security.
In a recent interview, Harry expressed a desire to repair family ties. “I would love reconciliation with my family,” he said. “Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff, but it would be nice to reconcile.”
The comments followed Harry’s legal loss against the UK government. He had challenged the decision to deny him automatic police protection in Britain. “We thought it was going to go our way,” he said. “I’m pretty gutted about the decision.”
The dispute stems from Harry’s 2020 decision to step back from royal duties. He moved to California with Meghan Markle and their children, Archie and Lilibet. After their exit, the Home Office ruled that Harry would not receive police protection by default during UK visits.
Harry voiced concern that the policy puts his family at risk. He also claimed the decision was meant to control him. “There’s a lot of control and ability in my father’s hands,” he said. “This could be resolved through him, not necessarily by intervening, but by stepping aside to let the experts do what is necessary.”
He called the situation “a good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up,” reflecting his frustration with how authorities handled it.
Despite the challenges, Harry admitted he misses the UK. “I love my country. I always have, despite what some people in that country have done,” he said. “It’s sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”
He also acknowledged that some relatives may never forgive him for publishing his memoir, Spare. The book, along with previous interviews and documentaries, strained his relationships with both King Charles and Prince William.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment on his remarks about reconciliation. However, a palace spokesperson noted that the security case underwent thorough legal reviews. Courts consistently upheld the decision against Harry’s request.
King Charles continues to undergo cancer treatment. Royal aides say he is responding well. Still, Harry’s comments make clear that emotional distance remains between him and his family.
For now, reconciliation remains uncertain. Whether the royal family and Harry can rebuild their bond may depend on more than just time—it may require trust and compromise from both sides.
