The Cher Maximen murder case reached its conclusion at the Old Bailey. A judge sentenced Shakeil Thibou, 20, to life in prison for stabbing Cher Maximen during Notting Hill Carnival. Thibou must serve at least 29 years before becoming eligible for parole.
On August 25, violence broke out during the carnival’s family day. Thibou, carrying a zombie knife, lunged at Adjei Isaac during a street fight. As Isaac dodged the attack, he collided with Cher Maximen. She fell. Thibou immediately stabbed her as she lay on the ground.
Doctors tried to save Maximen, but she died in the hospital six days later. Her three-year-old daughter saw the entire incident unfold just steps away. The attack took place in front of families, children, and police officers.
Judge Philip Katz described the Cher Maximen murder as “brutal and shocking.” He emphasized the trauma suffered by Maximen’s family. “You acted without hesitation,” Katz told Thibou. “You used your knife in a crowded public space, showing complete disregard for human life.”
Police released bodycam footage that captured the chaos. Judge Katz called it “terrifying.” Officers at the scene struggled to control the crowd as the violence escalated.
Throughout the hearing, Thibou showed no emotion. He sat in silence, wearing a face mask and a blue beanie hat. Prosecutors detailed how he brought the zombie knife to the event and willingly used it during a fight.
Jurors found Thibou guilty of murder and attempted grievous bodily harm against Isaac. They also convicted him of possessing an offensive weapon. The court condemned his use of a zombie knife, a weapon banned in the UK due to its brutal design.
Cher’s young daughter, according to the court, will live with the memory of watching her mother die. What should have been a joyful family event turned into a lifelong trauma.
The court also heard that Thibou’s brothers joined the violence. Sheldon Thibou, 25, assaulted PC Oliver Mort and took part in the disorder. The court found him guilty on both counts. Shaeim Thibou, 22, also attacked the officer. However, the court cleared him of violent disorder.
Judge Katz scheduled Shaeim’s sentencing for later that day. Sheldon will receive his sentence on a future date.
The Cher Maximen murder horrified communities across the UK. Friends described Maximen as a joyful and caring mother. Many called for better security at large public events like Notting Hill Carnival. Others demanded stronger action against knife crime.
Police acknowledged the public outcry and promised to review their approach to managing high-risk gatherings. They urged the public to report anyone carrying weapons or instigating violence.
By sentencing Shakeil Thibou to life in prison, the court delivered justice for Cher Maximen. His violent choices destroyed a family and shattered a community. The punishment reflects the severity of his actions and honors the life he took far too soon.
