Liverpool FC parade car attack suspect Paul Doyle appeared in court on Friday following a shocking incident during the club’s Premier League victory parade. The crash left 79 people injured, including two children.
Police arrested Doyle, 53, on Monday night. They transported him from custody to Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning. Wearing a black suit and grey tie, Doyle confirmed his name, date of birth, and address in a croaky voice.
District Judge Paul Healey led the session. Doyle did not enter a plea and sat with his head lowered during the proceedings. He showed visible emotion and appeared to hold back tears.
The courtroom quickly reached capacity. Due to the intense public interest, court staff opened an extra room to accommodate additional journalists and onlookers.
Prosecutors outlined seven charges against Doyle:
- Two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
- Two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent
- Two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent
- One count of dangerous driving
These charges involve six people, including two children. One of the children is named in both a wounding and an attempted GBH charge.
Police say the crash took place on Monday while fans celebrated Liverpool FC’s title on Water Street. Thousands had gathered to watch the parade when a car struck the crowd. Authorities confirmed that 79 individuals, aged between nine and 78, suffered injuries.
Seven victims remain hospitalized in stable condition. Judge Healey issued restrictions to prevent the public identification of any victims.
Although Doyle did not speak beyond confirming his identity, his behavior in court suggested emotional distress. The businessman and father of three remained silent throughout most of the session.
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed plans to review the charges further as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the case has drawn national media attention, prompting calls for increased security at public events.
Court officials have remanded Doyle in custody. He is scheduled to appear before Liverpool Crown Court later this afternoon.
