August 2, 2025 – The funeral service for Vanessa Whyte, a veterinary surgeon, and her two children, James Rutledge and Sara Rutledge, who were tragically murdered in County Fermanagh last week, is taking place today in Barefield, County Clare.
The family was fatally shot in their home in Maguiresbridge on July 23, 2025. Vanessa, 45, her son James, 14, and daughter Sara, 13, were all killed in a horrific attack that shocked the community. Hundreds of mourners have gathered in Barefield to pay their respects and support the grieving family.
A Community in Mourning
The funeral Mass is being held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Vanessa’s hometown of Barefield, with her family and friends attending to honor the mother and her children. They will be laid to rest at Templemaley Cemetery.
Items representing the family were placed next to their coffins, including a blue card symbolizing Vanessa’s career as a veterinarian, a hurl representing James’ passion for hurling, and a cat toy in honor of Sara’s love for animals.
Tributes to a Loving Family
The Bishop of Ferns, Ger Nash, spoke of the “unspeakable loss” felt by the community of Barefield, describing Vanessa, James, and Sara as irreplaceable members of their families, schools, workplaces, and sports clubs. He noted how people from all walks of life had shown sympathy and solidarity following the tragedy.
Fr. Brendan Quinlivan, reflecting on Vanessa’s younger years, shared how she had been a “vivacious and lively” person. Her dedication as a veterinary surgeon was a reflection of her generous spirit, which she passed down to her children.
The Tragic Events
On July 23, 2025, police responded to an incident at the Drummeer Road home, a rural area about 75 miles west of Belfast. Tragically, two victims were declared dead at the scene, and a third died later in hospital.
Hours after the shooting, a man from the same household was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, and investigations suggested a possible triple murder and attempted suicide.
On Monday night, the man suspected of the killings, Ian Rutledge, passed away in hospital.
A Community’s Support
The funeral service has seen an outpouring of grief from the wider community. Pupils from Enniskillen Royal Grammar, where James and Sara attended school, are among the many mourners in attendance. The community has rallied together, with mourners urged to wear bright colors in memory of the family’s vibrant lives.
The local GAA clubs of Maguiresbridge and St Joseph’s Doora Barefield also came together in large numbers to honor the family.
Appeal for Information
Detectives continue to investigate the shooting and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
