August 2, 2025 – Mohananeethan “Mohan” Muruganantharajah, a 27-year-old from Swansea, tragically drowned after heroically rescuing his nieces at the Sgwd y Pannwr Falls in Bannau Brycheiniog, also known as the Brecon Beacons.
The incident occurred in September 2023 when Muruganantharajah was visiting the falls with his family. As some of his relatives ventured into the water, they got into difficulty. Mohananeethan rushed to their aid, helping several family members to safety. Unfortunately, after rescuing his two nieces, aged 8 and 9, Mohan became trapped under a ledge and was unable to resurface.
His body was recovered the following day by specialist teams.
A Hero’s Legacy
Mohananeethan Muruganantharajah was described as a “hero” by those who knew him. Family members and others who contributed to an online fundraising campaign praised his selflessness, noting that he had saved the lives of his young nieces at the cost of his own.
Mohananeethan, a qualified pilot, was also remembered as a “brother figure” to all in his family. His untimely death has left an irreplaceable gap in the hearts of those who loved him.
Tribute to a Selfless Man
The inquest into his death was led by Patricia Morgan, South Wales Central area coroner, who confirmed that the death was an accident. Family and friends gathered to honor his memory, with many paying tribute to his bravery and his impact on the lives of those around him.
