UK Seizes 6 Million Illegal Vapes as Nationwide Ban Nears
Trading Standards officers across England have seized over six million illegal or non-compliant vaping products in the past three years, according to new BBC analysis. As the UK prepares to ban the sale and possession of disposable vapes from June 1, authorities are intensifying efforts to curb the booming illicit vape trade.
Paul Leighton, a senior Trading Standards officer in Newcastle, described the networks behind illegal vapes as “sophisticated,” with products found hidden behind false walls, fridges, hydraulic tiles, and even beneath floorboards. These vapes often exceed legal nicotine and tank limits and lack proper health warnings, posing major health risks.
More than 7,500 instances of illegal vape sales were recorded during test purchases, and at least 316 shops were closed between 2022 and 2024 for violations, including selling to children.
The upcoming ban on disposable vapes is expected to reduce the flow of illicit products. From June 1, those caught selling or supplying them will face a £200 fine, escalating to unlimited fines or imprisonment for repeat offenses.
With high-profile seizures in areas like Hillingdon and Kent—due to proximity to Heathrow and Dover—enforcement agencies say efforts are paying off. Still, with millions of unregulated vapes in circulation, authorities acknowledge the fight is far from over.
Trading Standards will gain additional powers and funding this year, including £10 million to support enforcement and the hiring of 80 apprentice officers. While industry leaders support the clampdown, they call for stronger border controls to stop illegal imports at their source.
