Freddie Flintoff Recalls Terrifying Top Gear Crash: “I Thought I Was Dead”
In a deeply personal interview featured in the upcoming Disney+ documentary Flintoff, former England cricketer and television presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff opens up about the traumatic 2022 Top Gear crash that nearly took his life.
Flintoff was filming at the Top Gear test track in Surrey when the Morgan Super 3 vehicle he was driving flipped and dragged him along the track for 50 meters. Speaking candidly, he revealed, “I thought I was dead… just black for the rest of my days.” He feared he had lost his face and described the pain as unbearable.
Surgeon Jahrad Haq, who reconstructed Flintoff’s shattered face, described the injuries as among the worst he’d seen—severe facial damage, broken ribs, and lost teeth. The crash left Flintoff physically and emotionally scarred. “Part of me wishes I’d died,” he said, acknowledging the mental toll but affirming his desire to live.
Flintoff credited his return to cricket coaching as key to his recovery. His wife, Rachael, believes the sport “saved him,” giving him a renewed purpose. Now coaching England Lions, Flintoff has also returned to television, with a new season of Field of Dreams and a revival of the game show Bullseye.
With Top Gear indefinitely paused by the BBC and a settlement reached with Flintoff, his story offers a raw look at survival, resilience, and healing. Flintoff premieres on Disney+ on April 25.
